Oceanic Time Warner Cable does not offer RoadRunner Internet service on Molokai. The Molokai offering, WAVE, is a substandard service of very low dependability. The only thing the Molokai WAVE service has in common with the RoadRunner service on other islands is monthly cost. A Broadband alternative to Oceanic WAVE service is unavailable to many Molokai customers. Oceanic is abusing its monopoly position charging RoadRunner rates for substandard WAVE service on Molokai".

We pay the RoadRunner Internet rate for WAVE Plus but receive only half the "Up To" speeds of RoadRunner/.

RoadRunner: 10 Mbps download and 1 Mbps upload speeds

WAVE Plus: 5 Mbps download and 0?.35 Mbps upload speeds

The "Up To" speeds are available only at times of low demand,. The service deteriorates during the day|. In the evenings, download speeds from the San Jose SpeedTest:.net site the Oceanic Technicians use on Service Calls frequently drops to download speeds in the low 1Mbps:. When I call Tech Support, they agree all my stuff is working fine,. The problem is a known issue, limited bandwidth for the Molokai customers currently using the system. When asked if the problem is being addressed, I get the response they are looking into it and could do something this year. They can adjust the bill for the poor service but seem little interested in fixing the problem.

A February 2011 letter from Oceanic stated service in Hawaii would be upgraded to 10 Mbps download and 1 Mbps upload speeds during the year. Also, a rate increase was granted for the upgrade of service. Rates for Molokai Internet service increased $5/mo March 2011. Another rate increase is just months away.

WAVE service on Molokai was not upgraded and is not scheduled for upgrade. Customers using WAVE on Molokai should not pay for an upgrade they did not and will not receive.

So that's the skinny - WAVE on Molokai is substandard, they know it is substandard but happily charge RoadRunner rates. They may formulate a plan for upgrade before Global Warming raises the sea level sufficiently to inundate the island and make the effort unnecessary. 1287536

Ed - I had a Service Call with both our Techs 10 April. Showed my log of lousy evening service since December. He said we were all on different nodes so give a call when the usual poor speeds deteriorated to the pathetic evening speeds. At 2015 I got 1.03Mbps San Jose SpeedTest and 790Kbps Hawaii Broadband site. They did a little better (high 1Mbps). It is not my node 4, it is the whole island. He called Honolulu Nets. Got a call back and said they would try to send a few more electrons our way. Week later - no improvement.

I understand none of you are going to rag your service but everyone I talk to, in various ways, eludes to the fact Molokai has inadequate bandwidth is a known issue. It is being discussed but the bean counters won't pop for the money to fix the bloody thing.

After four months, I'm tired of calling Tech Support each week. Waste of time for all involved. Sending out a Tech and maybe a MODEM is also a waste.

I'm retired and fed up enough to make the calls. This is not $50/mo broadband service. I should be on continuous Service Interruption credits until it is broadband service. Only thing the bean counters understand is revenue. Molokai should not be paying for service we don't get.

Interesting item I heard: WAVE is Oceanic's own system, they do not pay TWE a RoadRunner franchise fee. Oceanic keeps 100% of the Wave dollars, only 63% of the RoadRunner revenue. I'm sure there are some services for the 37 cents of every dollar TWE gets but the net revenue from Oceanic WAVE customers is 50% higher. That should go a long way in offsetting the higher "rural" infrastructure cost per customer. Rip off seems apt for the island of Molokai. Doug

Aloha PalmFrond. Apologies for the delayed response. Twitter did not notify us of this response this time.

I have escalated your report to our special team in Care as well as those involved in that area, though, ultimately, it's probably going to be a call that comes from the higher-ups.

Please continue to follow up directly with Care on this issue (643-2100), as I'd hate to miss a reply from you on this 3rd party site again. Mahalo for your patience and understanding.

WAVE is still slow. $50/month for 500Kbps-2Mbps service. KUHL! Evenings are kilobit per second down. How come Oceanic gets away with "it is not economically feasible to provide service" but I'm expected to pay full RoadRunner rates?

I talked to three other subscribers on the same over taxed WAVE yesterday. All are getting about the same as I. Service call is scheduled for Friday - new MODEM - but that won't help.

Must be nice to have a monopoly.

Aloha Doug,

Not sure why the message disappeared. We have no control over this site. In any case, I am glad that you got a call back, but not so much that it came down to a financial thing, as you say. Yes, please continue to contact support as they would be the best place to start for requests of this nature. Mahalo for your patience and understanding.

Yo, Oceanic Ed: This was up, then disappeared,. Odd - Oceanic conspiracy? Got a call from Maui Ops today. He mentioned they've been looking into higher capacity Mico or fiber but the bean counters aren't going for it. Why should they - collecting RR rates for 500Kbps-2Mbps service from a rickety old system. Hey, it's a monopoly and they are getting away with it I thanked him for the call and asked that he continue to seek funding for the needed maintenance and capacity to actually provide broadband service for Molokai. I will continue to call Tech Support each week and extend my Service Interruption credit. I hurl all insults in the general direction of Oceanic Headquarters …. Doug

Yo, Oceanic Ed - I don't do FaceBook, hope you see this. I've contacted Tech Support 12 times since 30 Dec. Have an ongoing email exchange with Support for the same period. Maybe you can look me up and use either of my @wave.hicv.net addresses. Acct: 4-415595-01-0
